Meet our latest Health Hero WBHHS Manager Information Security and Compliance Kathryn Cumner. International Access to Information Day on 28 September reminds us about the importance of compliance and information access rights and responsibilities. That’s why it’s timely to feature Kathryn, who oversees compliance across our health service.
How long have you been with WBHHS?
Almost 9 years
How do you describe what you do?
My role is to ensure information security compliance is upheld throughout our health service. I provide advice on corporate records and ensure our Information Access Unit is up-to-date and the team is supported.
What’s best about your job?
The diversity! Each day truly is different.
What was your path into health care?
I started out in health admin at the GP practice in my hometown of Murgon. I always thought as a child/teen I would have a nursing career after watching the care and attention given to family members by the Blue Nurses. I actually started my nursing degree, but life happened and here I am.
What does being part of a team mean to you?
Being part of a team means you’re never alone and we have a brilliant team that works well together. We’ve landed in a sweet spot where every team member complements the next and it just works so well.
When you’re not at work, you are…
Mostly hanging out at home. I live on about 40 acres outside Hervey Bay. I love the solitude and freedom to just be…… but I’ve also got the beach 10 minutes down the road if I want it.
What do you enjoy about living in Wide Bay?
Options! We moved here from a small mining town. We really have most things at our fingertips.
Tell us a fun fact about you.
Rather than share a fun fact about myself I’d like to acknowledge the work of the Information Access Unit. In 2025/26 the unit scanned/extracted/considered approximately 340,000 pages of electronic, and paper based clinical and corporate records. An amazing achievement!
What song are you listening to most right now?
My playlist is a mixed bag! I listen to anything and everything.
I must add, seeing Pete Murray at the Sounds of Rock right here in Hervey Bay this month was pretty awesome!
