Bundaberg Hospital’s Paediatric Ward was transformed into a sea of pirates on Friday as staff, patients, families and community members joined forces to raise funds for Childhood Cancer Support through the annual Talk Like a Pirate Day.
The event featured a lively bake sale, a raffle, money board draws and plenty of swashbuckling fun, with activities for children including face painting, ring toss, treasure hunts and even craft stations to make DIY telescopes and hook hands.
By the end of the day, raffle prizes had been drawn, lucky winners surprised with their prizes including a day trip to Lady Musgrave Island and more than $7,000 had been raised for families in need.
Event Coordinator and Paediatric ward nurse Kasey Houston said the community’s support was overwhelming.
“Arrr, the treasure we raised went straight to helpin’ brave little buccaneers and their families face childhood cancer,” she said.
“Yo-ho-ho, it was a fine day for cakes, prizes and plenty o’ pirate cheer and all for a cause worth more than any buried treasure!”
“We were blown away by how generous everyone was, whether it was buying baked goods and raffle tickets, or just getting involved in the pirate theme.”
Childhood Cancer Support provides families with free accommodation close to Brisbane’s Queensland Children’s Hospital, as well as food, transport and counselling services.
Funds raised from Talk Like a Pirate Day will go towards building a new accommodation village to support even more families.
Kasey said every dollar raised goes directly towards helping families who are going through one of the hardest times imaginable.
“Knowing that we can play even a small role in supporting them is incredibly special,” she said.
“The families we are supporting don’t just need treatment for their child, they need a safe place to stay, practical help and someone walking beside them.
“That’s what Childhood Cancer Support does, and that’s why days like today matter so much.”
The Bundaberg Hospital Paediatric Ward thanked all staff, patients, families and community members who contributed to making the fundraiser such a success.
