With a professional background in psychology, research, health promotion and publishing, Elizabeth always knew volunteering would play a role in her retirement.
After relocating to Hervey Bay in 2023, she saw an opportunity to keep her skills active while making a meaningful contribution to the community.
Her first volunteer position was in the Oncology Unit, where she spent her time supporting patients by chatting with them, providing tea and coffee, and ensuring they felt comfortable during treatment.
“The nursing staff do such a fantastic job and it’s good to take a little pressure off them by being around to do those small things while they get on with nursing,” Elizabeth said.
Later, to her delight, Elizabeth was invited to join the Research Consumer Advisory Group which includes a diverse team of staff and volunteer consumer representatives who bring a wide range of professional backgrounds and lived experiences to the table.
“We offer feedback on research projects, provide a consumer perspective and assess the benefits for the community,” she said.
“Some members of the group are also happy to mentor international medical graduates who have limited research experience.”
For Elizabeth, being a volunteer is not only enjoyable but a valuable experience facilitating her engagement with the community and giving her a real sense of belonging in her new hometown.
“It also nurtures my love of research and health promotion,” Elizabeth said.
“I really enjoy the discussions we have and the processes we’ve established to ensure we’re truly representing the community.
“It’s great being part of a strong and enthusiastic team that has a clear mission to provide positive outcomes.”
This year's theme for National Volunteer Week is "Your year to Volunteer" encouraging people to make a year of meaningful involvement, in ways that work for them.
Elizabeth’s volunteering is a shining example of the rewards that come with volunteering, and she strongly recommends giving it a go.
“Volunteering is a wonderful way to provide a valuable service, meet new people, join a team and have fun.
“My experience at Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service has been very rewarding.
“I am grateful for the support and feedback I’ve received from my volunteer coordinator Kim Hanns who has shown that my contribution in giving back to the community is valued.”
