Children and families staying in Hervey Bay Hospital’s Children’s Ward are being welcomed into a brighter, more engaging environment thanks to a new series of themed artwork wraps transforming patient rooms.
The project has seen large-scale, child-friendly artworks installed throughout the paediatric ward, turning clinical spaces into imaginative environments designed to reduce anxiety, support wellbeing and make hospital stays more positive for young patients.
Each room now features a unique theme inspired by consultation with children, families and staff. Themes include space adventures, under-the-sea scenes, Australian animals, camping and enchanted forests, bringing colour, creativity and a sense of play into the hospital environment.
Chief Executive, Debbie Carroll said the project highlights the importance of designing healthcare spaces with children and families in mind.
“Hospital can be an overwhelming place for children, particularly when they are unwell,” Ms Carroll said.
“These beautifully designed room wraps help create a more welcoming and comforting space, and I want to sincerely thank our paediatric team for their dedication throughout this program and for always advocating for child-centred care.”
The project was coordinated by WBHHS Volunteer Services Coordinator, Kim Hanns, who worked closely with staff, consumers and partners to bring the vision to life.
“This project is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when we work together,” Ms Carroll said.
“I’d like to thank Kim for her leadership and commitment in guiding this project from concept to completion.”
“We are incredibly grateful to Jordan from Hervey Bay Graphics for donating his time and creative expertise to design and install the wraps, and to Partners in Care Together, for coordinating the funding raised through the Woolworths Easter Appeal,” the Chief Executive said.
“This community support will make a lasting difference for our youngest patients and their families.”
The impact of the artwork has already been strongly felt by families.
“It doesn’t feel like a hospital or clinical anymore. The rooms feel fun and happy. I love it and so does my son,” said one parent.
Another parent shared how the artwork helped her child during her hospital stay.
“She loved it, talked about the planets and aliens a lot, and it allowed a lot of extra distraction and play opportunities,” they said.
Parents also described the rooms as calming, engaging and helpful for storytelling, conversation and easing anxiety during their child’s stay.
The themed room wraps demonstrate the power of arts in health to enhance patient experience and wellbeing. By involving families, staff and key stakeholders in the design process, the project has created a more welcoming, child-friendly ward that supports healing and connection.
