The Bundaberg Hospital Medical Education Unit celebrated another successful year of medical excellence as it hosted the annual awards ceremony to recognise outstanding interns and supervisors.

Running since 2013, these awards have become a staple in acknowledging the exemplary contributions within the Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service.

This year, the spotlight shines on Dr. Shanuka Mudadeniye Gedara, who secured the title of Bundaberg Intern of the Year.

Dr. Shanuka's outstanding accomplishments and contributions throughout the intern year stood out, demonstrating an impressive ability to engage in meaningful discussions with both PHOs and consultants.

His decisions on patient management showcased a high level of knowledge for his training level, and he consistently went above and beyond his duties to ensure optimal patient care.

The Highly Commended title was awarded to Dr. Fraser Bennett, recognising his commendable efforts and dedication to medical excellence.

Dr. Manoja Kulatunga from the Mental Health department was named Supervisor of the Year (small department). Dr. Kulatunga's active support and dedication to the wellbeing of junior doctors did not go unnoticed, making a significant impact on the medical education environment.

For the large department category, Dr. Bee Kiat Ang from Surgery emerged as the Supervisor of the Year.

Dr. Ang's outstanding support, constructive feedback, and readiness to assist junior doctors were highlighted.

She was praised for her encouragement and clarity in setting expectations, establishing herself as an exemplary role model for aspiring medical professionals.

Dr Vanessa Greig, Director of Clinical Training (North) said recognising excellence within the team is a highlight of the year.

“The dedication and exemplary qualities exhibited by these award recipients not only contribute to the growth and success of Bundaberg Hospital but also serve as a testament to the high standards upheld within the medical profession,” she said.

“As 40% of the interns for 2023 continue into the following year, the future of Bundaberg Hospital looks promising with a new generation of healthcare professionals dedicated to excellence.”
