The desire to learn something new was what inspired Gary Hooper to become a volunteer but 10 years on it has grown into a genuine passion for giving back to the community and connecting with others.
One of eight Justices of the Peace (JP) at the Hervey Bay Hospital, Gary can be found in the foyer once a month or visiting wards to sign paperwork at a patient’s bedside. His commitment doesn’t stop there but extends beyond the hospital walls to the Hervey Bay Courthouse where he volunteers as a JP each Thursday and at the Neighbourhood Centre.
“Being able to help someone who is in need of our services is very rewarding,” Gary said.
“I feel like I’m making a difference by helping someone who has either lost a loved one and are confronted with a mountain of paperwork for signing or, they have a loved one in hospital who may be at the end of their life and important papers need our attention.”
Gary said these moments can be emotional but he draws on his background as an aged care worker before retirement to help him cope.
“I feel for the family they’re leaving behind and I think to myself how fortunate I am,” he said.
“Also, it helps knowing I’ve done all I could to assist them by providing my services in their time of need.”
Gary said there was a high demand for JPs in Hervey Bay because some leave the area or take time off to travel.
More volunteers are needed and he encourages others to consider taking that step to volunteer as a JP or in some other role.
“It doesn't matter what your skill set is, you will be helping somebody in some way,” he said.
“Even if it is just visiting the hospital or an aged care facility once a month to talk to someone who doesn’t get many visitors.
“In the future, you may be the one looking for someone to help you.”
During Volunteer Week Gary is keen to give a shout-out to all volunteers wherever they may be.
“Thank you. You are all an important part of our community.”
