A strong desire to remain active and connected to the community after an early retirement was what led Cheryl to put her hand up for volunteering.

After a friend’s suggestion to join Partners In Care Together - a charitable foundation that supports Wide Bay Hospitals through fundraising activities - she did just that.

“I felt I had to give back in life as life has given me so much over the years,” Cheryl said.

“I needed to do something worthwhile and constructive and volunteering was the answer for me.”

Three years on Cheryl is still enjoying volunteering for two days a week in two roles, one at the Bundaberg Cancer Care Centre and the other as a community car driver.

She enjoys looking after patients while they receive their cancer treatment, serving up refreshments, making sure they’re comfortable and hoping she makes them feel a little special.

“I like to chat and because some of the patients are there for a few hours, a bit of conversation helps pass the time for them,” she said.

As a community car driver, Cheryl is helping people get to and from their hospital appointments, easing their anxiety and helping those who are not well enough to drive.

“Organising pick up and drop off times can be challenging but it all works out at the end of the day,” Cheryl said.

“Even on those days when I have to fit two, or sometimes three decent sized walking frames in the back of the car.”

Cheryl finds both of her volunteer roles very rewarding as she enjoys helping others and giving a hand when needed.

“I try to bring a little joy into people’s lives,” she said.

“Whether I’m dropping off a patient to the hospital for appointments or caring for someone receiving chemotherapy, I’m helping people feel better.

“Everyone has a story to tell so volunteering has also taught me to listen, have empathy and help if I can. You build friendships over time.”

With this year’s theme for National Volunteer Week in mind “Your year to volunteer”, Cheryl has some words of encouragement for those thinking about volunteering.

“What are you waiting for? Know that your contribution matters,” she said.

" If you have time on your hands, get out there and volunteer.

“There’s a niche for everyone.  Partners In Care Together have lots of different roles that can be filled by anyone.

“Volunteering makes the community more positive and will give you a sense of purpose.”
