Meet our latest Health Hero, Catering Assistant Stephen Plummer whose idea of working within a team at the Maryborough Hospital is having a strong 'can-do' attitude and supporting each other.
How long have you been with WBHHS?
Five years.
How do you describe what you do?
My role in the kitchen is to deliver meals to our clients and support their overall experience.
One of my favourite parts is serving morning tea, especially our scones and muffins. It gives me the opportunity to connect with clients, have a chat, use their names, and help them feel comfortable.
After service, there’s always plenty to do with dishes to keep things running smoothly.
What's best about your job?
I enjoy working alongside my fellow kitchen staff and living our core values every shift. We all share the same goal - to make each patient's stay the best it can be.
What was your path into health care?
My pathway into healthcare wasn’t a typical one. Before joining Queensland Health, I worked in the manufacturing industry. I made the transition into healthcare-focused hospitality, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to be part of a team that supports people every day.
What does being part of a team mean to you?
Being part of our kitchen team means having a strong “can-do” attitude in everything we do. We support each other, work closely together, and that teamwork helps the day run smoothly.
When you're not at work, you are...
Spending time with my wife, enjoying life and making the most of my time with our grandchildren.
What do you enjoy about living in Wide Bay?
I like being close to the coast, only about 30 minutes away, and still within a few hours of Brisbane.
It's a great place to raise a family, with plenty to see and do.
Tell us a fun fact about you.
My wife and I love seeking out new adventures and are always planning our next travel holiday. I also enjoy a good ghost tour!
What song are you listening to most right now?
There is always music playing in the kitchen but I'd love to hear a bit more of AC/DC.
